Knuckle pads.

Knuckle pads are well circumscribed thickenings of the skin over the metacarpophalangeal and, more commonly, the proximal interphalangeal joints. Although the association with several other clinical syndromes including Dupuytren's disease is well documented, most cases are idiopathic. We present a case of knuckle pads and briefly review the history and course of this disease.

Radar interferometry for measuring tidal strains across cracks on Europa

[1] A major uncertainty in understanding the interaction between the surface of Europa and its ocean below is the present-day activity of fractures. Using well-constrained models for tidal strain and a force balance in a cracked shell, we estimate the shear and normal displacement of cracks that penetrate upward from the base of the shell. If more than half of the plate is fractured, then surfa...

A fiber optic sensor for measuring glucose in aqueous solutions

In this paper, the set-up of a multi-mode fiber optic sensor for measuring glucose in aqueous solutions is investigated and evaluated. The basis of this sensor is based on the Fresnel Reflection. In this setup, a helium-neon laser is used as a light source, a fiber optic probe, photocell as detector and a digital multimeter. The statistical analysis of the recorded data shows a highly linear be...

Knuckle pads in children.

Knuckle pads occur from benign thickening of the skin, principally the epidermis, and are occasionally seen in children. Despite the name, knuckle pads most commonly overlie the proximal interphalangeal joints. They must be differentiated from a variety of other cutaneous abnormalities. There is no consistently effective treatment, but knuckle pads have been reported to resolve spontaneously in...
